Traditionnellement, on définit le verbe par le «sens» en enseignant aux élèves qu'on le reconnaît parce qu'il «indique une action». «Le verbe est un mot qui dit ce qu'on fait», dit un manuel de CE2. Ce critère faisant référence au sens fonctionne mal pour un certain nombre de verbes comme être, sembler, souffrir, penser, recevoir, etc. qui ne sont pas tous d'état et pour lesquels le sujet ne sera pas agissant. Le verbe n'est pas le seul à signifier des actions. On trouve certains noms comme départ, cueillette, floraison, etc. qui répondent également à ce critère « indique l'action ».. Certaines grammaires font remarquer que le verbe se caractérise par ses formes variées (la flexion). Il comprend une base qui porte le sens lexical (c 'est-à-dire un radical qui peut se présenter sous plusieurs formes : il écrit/ ils écriv-ent) et des morphèmes de flexion (c'est-à-dire des terminaisons qui indiquent les notions de personne (parle/ parlons), nombre (parle/parlent), temps (parlera/parlait), d'aspect en cours (il parle) / aspect terminé (il a parlé), mode (il parle/il parlât), genre (qu'il écrit /la lettre qu'il a écrite). Or, il n'est pas le seul mot à connaître des formes diverses ! Par exemple, les pronoms dits personnels varient en personne et selon la fonction qu'ils assument dans la phrase. Ils possèdent une forme quand ils sont sujets (je, tu, il, ils), une deuxième forme lorsqu'ils sont compléments d'objet directs (me, te, se, leur), une troisième lorsqu'ils sont compléments introduits par une préposition (moi, toi, lui, elle, soi, eux). Le pronom personnel possède donc également plusieurs réalisations...
